Theatre Specifications

Located on the ground floor with direct access to the street allows for efficient access to the space. The interior of the Theater has a raw, industrial feel while still retaining a modern elegance. The walls are mostly brick, with one wall finished in black stucco. The south wall contains 5 large, arched windows that have blackout shades on them. The Theater and all of its ancillary rooms are all fully heated and cooled. 

Dimensions

The Theater 68’-6”(20.8m) by 65’(19.8m) long. There is a 39’(11.9m) by 13’(4m) lobby/entrance area with bathrooms on either side. The gable roof peaks at 28’-6”(8.7m) in the center and slopes down to 14’-1”(4.3m) on either side. The overall square footage of the main space is 4,992 sq. ft.(459sq. m)  

Occupancy Restriction

The occupancy of the Theater is limited to 299 people at any one time. This includes performers, staff and any other members of your organization. This is due to egress available in the event of a fire or other emergency. However, you may be able to obtain special permitting from the City of New York to increase the capacity to above 500. This normally involves using the two large loading doors as an additional means of egress. 

Dressing Rooms

There are two 20’ x 13’(6m x 4m) dressing rooms that can accommodate around 12 performers each. They contain full makeup mirrors, countertops and lighting. They each contain a bathroom as well as a shower. Each dressing room offers 11’-9”(3.6m) of costume hanging space. They are also excellent places for catering, storage or for production offices. 

Loading Doors

The Theater is on the ground floor and the loading doors allow direct access to 26th St. The doors in-swing and the opening is 10’-11”(3.3m) high by 15’-6”(4.7m) wide. The street in front of the Theater is a commercial loading zone from 8am-6pm during weekdays. It is recommended to block space early in the day for your truck. There is no loading dock, forklift or ramp on-site. 

Power

There is one 400 amp 3 phase 208v service normally used for auxiliary lighting power as well as a 100 amp 3 phase 208v service for sound power. The 100 amp service has an isolated neutral and ground. Both services have rev. neutral and ground 10’(3m) cam-lok tails tied into them. There is an additional 100 amp 3 phase service normally used for powering the rigging trusses. This service has no neutral run to it. The Theater dimming racks are tied into an 800 amp 3 phase service. They are located on the mezzanine of the Theater and are all dedicated services. The mezzanine is 11’(3.4m) off of the floor. Approximately 25’(7.6m) of feeder is needed to reach the NE corner of the floor. There are numerous 20 amp duplex receptacles throughout the Theater on the walls as well as on the roof trusses. The Studio has 2 additional 200 amp 3 phase disconnects. They are about a 100’(30.5m) feeder run to reach the Theater. They both have Cam-Lok plugs that are also rev. neutral and ground. They also have 3 100amp 2PnG connections available at each disconnect. 

Lifts, Ladders and Forklifts

There is one 36’(11m) platform height battery operated Genie Lift. Ladders:

  • 1 22’ (6.7m) Aluminum Extension ladder
  • 1 14’ (4.3m) Aluminum A-Frame ladder
  • 2 10’ (3.0m) Fiberglass A-Frame ladders
  • 2 8’ (2.4m) Fiberglass A-Frame ladders
  • 1 6’ (1.8m) Fiberglass A-Frame ladder
  • 1 3’ (0.9m) Wooden A-Frame ladder

Scissor lifts are permitted in the Theater and Studio. It is also possible to drive a forklift from 26th street directly into the Theater. 

Cable Management

The Theater is equipped with cable trays on either side of the room with separate levels for lighting as well as video and sound. They offer an excellent way to keep cables off of the floor. There are also cable pass-thrus that provide access to the mezzanine, the dressing rooms and other areas of the Theater. The height of the cable trays is 11’(3.4m) off of the concrete floor. There are also cable-hooks on the sides of the roof trusses for the swags from the rigging trusses to the cable trays. House cable may not be moved from its permanent position. 

Storage

There is very limited storage on site and it is recommended that if there is a lot of outside equipment being brought in that you remove your “empties” from the space. However, depending on your layout, there may be space available. 

General Lighting

There are metal halide work lights as well as dimmable halogen cans hung from the ceiling that provide house lighting. They are controlled through the theatrical lighting system and can be controlled from the lighting console. There are also three chandeliers in the lobby/entrance area that are controlled thru the theatrical lighting system. None of the general house lights can be gelled. 

Floors & Walls

The floor of the Theater and backstage hallway is concrete. It has been coated with an epoxy sealer. The floor is slightly out of level in certain areas, so accommodations should be made to level scenery, platforms etc. The floors of the dressing rooms are a rubberized vinyl. No drilling into the floor or fasteners of any kind may be inserted into the floor. No decals or logos may be affixed to the floor. Only painters tape may be used on the floor. Gaff or duct tape may not be used. 

The walls of the Theater are a variety of surfaces from stucco to brick to drywall. Screwing or drilling into the walls is not permitted. If any signage is to be affixed to any of the drywall surfaces, blue painters masking tape must be used to attach these items or be used under the primary method of adhesion. Gaff or duct tape may not be used. 

Dimming & Distribution

There are two ETC Sensor CEM+ 96 racks installed in the Theater. They are fed by a dedicated 800 amp disconnect. They break out to a total of 168 2.4kw dimmers and 6 6.0kw dimmers. These dimmers are run to two panels on the east and west sides of the mezzanine in the Theater. There are only socapex connectors for the 2.4kw dimmers and 60amp 2PnG connectors for the 6.0kw dimmers. There are also two portable ETC Sensor 24x2.4kw packs that can be set-up either in the Theater or studio. They have two 2PnG connectors for each dimmer on them.  

Multi-Layout

6 circuit 12/14 multi-cables are distributed thru-out the Theater. They terminate at one of the two dimmer panels on either side of the mezzanine. 

House Lights

The Theater house lights are comprised of three components:

  • The overhead downlights include 46 black hanging cans, each lamped with a 250 watt PAR 38 halogen flood lamp. They are in 5 separate dimmers on the theatrical lighting system and are not individually controllable. Most of these cans do have a receptacle at the roof that allows them to be temporarily disconnected. 
  • The US wall uplights include 20 in-floor 100 watt narrow beam uplights. They are in 2 separate dimmers on the theatrical lighting system.
  • The lobby chandeliers include 3 “artichoke” shaped fixtures hung in the southern side of the Theater. They are lamped at 500 watts a piece and are controlled by one dimmer on the theatrical lighting system. The lobby chandeliers cannot be removed.

House Light Control

The House Lights are controlled thru a separate ETC Unison Heritage System. There are four stations total, located on the FOH Roof Truss, in the northwest corner (USR) of the theater and in the dimmer room. The station at the FOH Roof Truss is a Portable Connector Station. The controller for this has 9 faders as well as 7 button presets and off available. It can be located anywhere within 165’(50.3m) of the plug on the roof truss. The remaining three stations are 10 button preset stations with 7 presets and off available. The house lights may also be controlled thru the lighting console. If both methods of control are used, they will respond on a highest takes precedence method.  

Smoke & Haze

Smoke & Haze may be used however they require the fire alarm system to be reconfigured. Please let us know in advance if you will be using them in your production. 

Rigging

All equipment to be rigged or hung from either the studio or Theater roofs must be made known to the Director of Events no later than two weeks prior to your event.

A truss protector/condom must be used for all c-clamps that are directly hung on the trusses. 

Rigging Trusses

The Theater is equipped with multiple aluminum box trusses that can be used for hanging lighting, video, sound and scenery. They are all comprised of 20.5”(0.5m) Thomas General Purpose box truss except for the SL/SR FOH & OS trusses which are 12”(0.3m) Tomcat Light Duty box truss. They are all on CM Lodestar 16fpm(4.9mpm) motors. The approximate out trims are calculated from the concrete floor and are to the bottom member of the truss. All of the trusses are rigged with either hard steel points or GAC flex Spansets and are flat black in color.

  • Overstage Truss: 22’x40’(6.7m x 12.2m) located in the northern bay of the roof. It is hung on 6 one ton motors. Its out trim is approximately 17’-9”(5.4m).
  • FOH Truss: 22’x40’(6.7m x 12.2m) located in the southern bay of the roof. It is hung on 4 one ton motors. Its out trim is approximately 17’-9”(5.4m).
  • SL OS Truss: 22’(6.7m) long. Runs north-south just east of the Overstage Truss. It is on 2 one ton motors. It’s out trim is approximately 15’-0”(4.6m).
  • SL FOH Truss: 22’(6.7m) long. Runs north-south just east of the FOH Truss. It is on 2 one ton motors. It’s out trim is approximately 15’-0”(4.6m).
  • SR OS Truss: 22’(6.7m) long. Runs north-south just west of the Overstage Truss. It is on 2 one ton motors. It’s out trim is approximately 15’-0”(4.6m).
  • SR FOH Truss: 22’(6.7m) long. Runs north-south just west of the FOH Truss. It is on 2 one ton motors. It’s out trim is approximately 15’-0”(4.6m).
  • US Truss: 50’(15.2m) long. Runs east-west just north of the Overstage Truss. It is on 2 one ton motors. Its out trim is approximately 16’-9”(5.1m).
  • DS Truss: 44’(13.4m) long. Runs east-west just south of the FOH Truss. It is on 2 1⁄2 ton motors. Its out trim is approximately 17’-3”(5.3m). 

Weight Limits

The Theater has some very specific weight limits that must be followed. Each roof truss can accommodate 6,000 lbs(2,721kg). Any equipment that is rigged from the ceiling subtracts from this number. This number does not include the weight of the rigging trusses or the motors that they hang from. For example the roof truss between the FOH and Overstage trusses sees half the weight of the two rigging trusses. This comes to around 2,200 lbs(998kg). It is possible to strike unused rigging trusses to increase the capacity on others. It is essential that a light plot, speaker plot and any other flown equipment be submitted to the Venue Manager no later than two weeks in advance of your load-in. We won’t load in your show without it. 

Motor Control

All of the one ton motors are controlled by a 32 way Motion Laboratories controller and two distro’s. There is no programmable option for the system. The distro’s and controller do have open plugs to accommodate additional motors. The rigging trusses may only be operated by CEDAR LAKE. 

Rigging directly to the Roof

It is possible to rig directly to the roof as well. There are C-Channels that run north-south about every 4’(1.2m) that a spanset or air-craft cable can be choked to. Anything hung directly from the roof does factor into the overall 6000 lbs. capacity. It is not possible to rig from the C- Channels near the southern wall. They are capable of carrying very little weight. Ground support options must be used in this circumstance. 

There is no overhead grid access and no catwalks. Equipment must be rigged either to the rigging trusses or to the C-Channels. No fasteners of any kind may be inserted into the roof. 

Rigging Truss Restore

If any of the house rigging trusses are moved from their “house hang” position. They must be restored during the strike. Depending on the scope of the modification, an additional restore call may be required. 

In House Production

We do not have in house production services.

internet

Wired internet is run throughout the building. There is also wireless internet, which may be used as well. Coverage is not guaranteed throughout the building, but is strong in most areas. Connection is possible with your own provided laptop. Wireless Internet is provided free of charge. Our service is a Verizon T1 Line.

We do not have in-house catering.

Facilities

There is very limited on-site refrigeration and work areas for food preparation. Some space may be available for your event. Please let us know in advance if you will require these services. We also have a variety of tables & chairs. 

Wine, Beer & Liquor

CEDAR LAKE does not carry a liquor license. If you will be serving alcohol of any type during your event please ensure that you or your caterer has a temporary liquor license with New York State. 

Cleaning & Trash Removal

Event cleaning and basic trash removal is included in the rental license fee. Oversize and construction items are not included in CEDAR LAKE trash removal and are the responsibility of the renter. We request that all rented space is left in broom clean condition.

Trash may not be left on the curb outside the building for pick up. Dumpsters may be placed on the street with a permit from the NYC Department of Transportation at 200 Church Street. Permit cost is the responsibility of the renter.

Additional charges may apply for non-compliance.

Temporary Permits of Assembly & Sidewalk Permits    

CEDAR LAKE’s occupancy as rated by the City of New York for the Theater space is 299 and 64 for the Studio space. This can be raised to over 500 pending approval of the layout of the space by the City of New York.

CEDAR LAKE can recommend expeditors to work with in the procurement of this permit. They will require a ground plan of the space showing how your event will be laid out in the space. To extend the occupancy numbers, it normally requires the two loading doors on the south wall being available to be utilized as an additional means of egress.

Permits for the sidewalk and street outside of CEDAR LAKE should be filed with the NYC Street Activities Permit Office. It is recommended that they be filed at least two weeks prior to the date of your event.
